It is about a thirteen-year-old boy named Brian. It is such a fun book that both boys and girls enjoy immensely. I save it for the last novel of the year. Hatchet is one of my favorite books of Gary Paulsen’s that I have taught for numerous years now to seventh graders. I hope it inspires them to continue to pursue writing in their lives, just like Paulsen inspired many students to learn to love reading. Others can read our stories long after we’re gone. I told them that what we write leaves a legacy, even as students. How amazing is that? We all strive to leave a legacy in some way and authors leave behind a grand one. They will always live on through their works, for generation after generation. Yet, I reminded them that they leave behind this awesome legacy. The reason for this sadness is because that means they can’t write anymore books for us. I was explaining to my students about his death, and how I always feel sad when an author dies. So this 4.5/5 star rating is really more for the vibes and the message than the story. For Gary Paulsen’s Official Author Page, click here. It ends with an author's note where Paulsen basically explains how a lot of Brian's Saga was based on his real life and how for most of his life, he struggled with finding his place in the world.

That's what the barely there story of Brian's Return is about. Eventually you just have to say fuck it and find your own path.

I love this shit.īrian's Return is really specific in that it's about Brian having a really hard time letting go of his time in the woods and readjusting to "normal life." I think it's super relatable to anyone who's ever felt like they don't seem to care about the same things everyone else cares about. From the dissociative brawl that kicks off the story, to the random Shakespeare quotes, to the woo woo "medicine," to the fuck it all moment at the very end. It is crazy to see so much of an author in a book. There is barely a plot and the stakes feel incredibly low because we already know Brian has the survival skills to survive. Brian's Return is pretty much objectively worse than the first three books.

I've been having a lot of fun reading it. Brian's Saga is such a pure, simple, fun series. I was so excited when my hold for this came in.
